How to Wear a Hat Without Looking Like a D*&@#%.

Nothing says "I know how to dress" more than a man that can properly accessorize. Anyone can throw on a nice shirt & pants combo but it's the little details that make girls notice you're putting in the effort.

Hats are a great way to look like you're taking a fashion risk by completely transforming your outfit. However, hats can be difficult to pull off as there's a thin line between looking suave & looking like a complete d*^$%# bag (I hate this word but it really does apply to some guys in hats). Fear not, we will now discuss the rights & wrongs of hat choices to ensure you are on the right end of this spectrum.

What Types of Hat Should I Go For?
Of course the most important question is which style of hat you should go for. To be honest, this really varies on your face structure & personal style choices so it's tough to generalize. Here's a chart of several various hat types and I've gone ahead and scratched off the ones that will have you looking like your lifelong dream is to be in a boyband.

To keep it simple, we're going to stick with styles: The Fedora, Flat Cap, Pork Pie, and the Homburg (since most styles come close to fitting into these categories).

Fedora
Unfortunately, the fedora has gotten a bad rep in recent years as it's somehow become a favorite among men who lurk on the club dance floor, most likely wearing an unbuttoned vest and v-neck, anxiously awaiting a woman to show his impressive breakdancing skills to. However lets get one thing straight, the fedora is not the problem. The problem lies in the men who choose to wear fedoras. Let's take a look at the right and wrong way to wear this style.

The Good:
Black Fedora With Black Overcoat says Mad Men Dapper.
Kept simple with a plain tee= a big win.
Paired with a nice fitted sweater & collared shirt. Lebron does it right.

The Bad:
Two Huge Issues Here: 1) Absolutely no to pin striped-fedoras. You look like a swing dancer. 2) Please fight the urge to want to tip your hat at a lady. I promise it looks so much better in your head than it does actually executed.
Say no to this big satin ribbon (and white anywhere on the hat).
Unless you're Bear Bryant, stick to solids. Very few people can pull off a patterned hat.

The Flat Cap
I'm a big fan of the flat cap and think it's a pretty easy look to pull off. Sometimes called a "newspaper boy hat" these hats work with a wide variety of looks. We love them with anything from jeans & a v-neck to a nice suit.
Take a plain white tee to the next level
The perfect compliment to a classic suit
We love the subtle print of this one paired with a nice sweater & jeans
Your hat doesn't always have to match exactly with your suit. A neutral color hat can really compliment any other neutral you have on.

The Pork Pie
Out of all the hats we'll talk about, this one is perhaps the most risky. With a short, round brim, the pork pie (similar to the bowler) can pay off big time if you get it right. This shape works best with long narrow faces.
Can't go wrong with solid black
A great accessory to a simple outfit
What kind of wife would I be if I didn't show how good my husband looks in a hat ;)
Neutral colored hat with a fitted plain tee
The Homburg
This style is probably my favorite to see a man wearing. With a wider brim than a fedora, it looks really sharp and sophisticated. Here are some of our favorite ways to wear them:
Tyson Chandler isn't afraid to experiment with hats. One of the many reasons he's my "Best Dressed NBA Player"
In black, this style looks formal and is the perfect addition to an all black suit or sports coat. However, the brown looks much more casual and an awesome compliment to this laid back look.
A great hat can make for the center of your look. When in doubt, keep it simple.

Like anything in fashion (and in life), you can rock anything you feel confident in. Don't feel comfortable enough wearing a hat right off the bat? Dress up for your next themed party in a costume that requires you to wear one. I promise after tons of girls tell you how great you look, you'll have the courage to wear it again.  So what are you waiting for? Step outside your comfort zone and go buy yourself a hat!

Fall Essential #4: Gingham Shirt

You know that checkered fabric that looks like a picnic tablecloth? Well, it's called Gingham and you need to own it. Gingham shirts are one of those items you'll spend very little money on and wear roughly 10,000 times. Gingham technically refers to any colored lightweight checkered fabric, but I'd suggest you go with the classic black & white or navy & white for the most versatility.

How to Get it Right: For the love of God, please have it fit you. Go with a fit that is snug but still allows you to move freely and eat a comfortable meal without pipping a button. Since Gingham is good with layering, it should not be baggy or boxy so that you can easily wear a sweater or suit jacket over it. Our favorite ways to wear Gingham? Mixed with a complimentary patterned tie, under a classic suit, worn buttoned down over a v-neck, cuffed over a nice knit sweater, or worn alone with a colored pant. The possibilities are endless with Gingham!

Some Styling Inspiration:
With a colored pant
Complimented by a mixed patterned tie
Worn under a knitted sweater or blazer
As a dress shirt under a suit
Navy Gingham goes perfectly with a brown blazer or suit jacket
Worn with your Fall Vest (see previous post) + a denim jacket
Classically with denim

Fall Essential #3: Shawl Collar Sweater

We're back and talking the 3rd of our "Top 4 Fall Wardrobe Essentials". Allow me to introduce you to the shawl collar (cue: Lil' Troy "Wanna Be a Baller" because I can't get it out of my head when saying shawl collar aloud). A shawl collar is a rounded collar that extends into a continuous curve. You should also familiarize yourself with this term because its important to know your different collars so that you don't look clueless while tuxedo shopping and asked which you prefer.
Shawl Collar
How to Get it Right: At least one nicely fitted shawl collar sweaters should be a staple in your Fall wardrobe. They're great to layer on top of a patterned button down or dressed up under an overcoat (which hopefully you've purchased after reading the previous post) or over dress pants and a button down. If you want to take it more casual, go for a shawl collar sweater cardigan and leave it open over a plain v-neck. The shawl collar immediately gives off the impression that you care about your appearance and its far more interesting than a crew neck or a hoodie.

Shawl Collar Inspiration:
Over a striped t-shirt.. effortless
Over Chambray (which you may remember from the previous post)
Dressed up and worn over a vest & slacks
Worn open with a v-neck
Or just wear it "As is"
Relaxed & Open

Overall, women love this look because we know you're trying (we hate when you don't), without looking like you're trying too hard (because of course, we hate that too).
